These infrared photographs taken by France-based photographer David Keochkerian look like bizarre, saturated landscapes created from a Dr. Seuss illustration. Seasons seem reversed, with white trees appearing in spring, and bushes are transformed into something that looks like fragile blades of bubble gum. You can see much more on Facebook, and Keochkerian tells me some images are avilable as limited edition prints if you contact him directly. You don’t see ornate murals made of sugar everyday. Pretty sweet…!
Using materials that for centuries have been reserved as tasty decoration the finest cakes and pastries, Montreal-based artist Shelley Miller attacks brick walls and deteriorating urban surfaces with cake icing to create ornate scrolls and decorative motifs. While the medium itself is purely culinary, her illustrations and patterns borrow heavily from calligraphy and decorative arabesque scrolls seen in ancient temples and mosques. Another added dimension is its impermanence as the works crack, drip, and melt off the wall, potentially disappearing in just a few days.
I spent the New Year’s weekend on the Oregon coast with friends, and one of my favorite memories of the weekend was a speed sand castle building competition. We had four minutes apiece, and they were glorious. But not quite like this.

Call me old fashioned, but when I think of a sand castle competitions my mind is filled with images of giant structures adorned with mermaids, pirates, and sand dollars, enormous boat-devouring sharks, and faithful replicas of Mount Rushmore or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. How pleasantly surprised I was to find these striking figurative sculptural works by Cleveland-based sand sculptor and woodworker Carl Jara, who says his intention is to sculpt things with sand you would never expect to see at a sand castle competition. His work is so accomplished you almost forget the medium you’re looking at, the pieces appearing as if carved from marble or wood.
Jara began working with sand in high school when a desperate art teacher, afraid Carl’s insatiable hunger for art might lead him to re-take the available art classes a third time, connected him with sand sculptor Tom Morrison. Once in college he studied fine arts, mainly illustration and graphic design, but when it came time for his degree show at Meyers School of Art in Akron, he realized he possessed neither the desire nor talent to become a designer, and decided to focus his efforts on a 15-foot sand sculpture. The response was overwhelming and landed Jara on the evening news and served as the formal launching point of his career that now includes nine World Championship medals. Colossal is a fantastic Art/Design blog that I’m a big fan of. One of their most popular posts from 2011 was of high-speed liquid photography by Heinz Maier.
It never ceases to amaze me: just when I think I’ve seen every possible permutation of an artform or technique—be it figurative sculpture, stop motion animation, or in this case, high speed photography—somebody comes along and manages to do something radically different. German photographer Heinz Maier says that he began taking photographs less than a year ago in late 2010. He claims to not know what direction he’s heading in just yet, right now he’s experimenting with macro photography, mostly insects, animals, and these delicate high speed water droplets. Personally, I think he’s found a great direction. There are so many things happening here to make these photographs simply outstanding: the lighting, the colors, the occasional use of symmetry in the reflection of water, let alone the skill of knowing how to use the camera itself. Artist Gavin Worth has followed a road less traveled (or perhaps, more traveled). He was born in Zimbabwe in 1981, grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico and then lived for nearly a decade in San Francisco where he found work as an actor and musician before leaving for Cairo, Egypt to teach at the American International School. He never attended art school, and in his spare time has nurtured a lifelong obsession with drawing, painting, and sculpture. Via his website:
By bending black wire into something of freestanding line drawings, I create sculptures that engage the viewer by involving them in their subtle changes. When the light in the room shifts, so does the mood of the piece. A breeze might softly move an arm. My wire sculptures tell stories of simple human moments: a woman adjusting her hair, a face gazing from behind tightly wrapped arms, a mother gently cradling her baby. The honest, unguarded moments are the ones that I find to be the most beautiful.
Geiman said he travels quite a bit around the U.S. and picks up objects wherever he goes and uses them in his work. Call them inlaid sculptures or 3D silhouettes, they’re just plain cool.
