Skincare company Glossier has opened a new store in Seattle Washington, and its standout for the sleek tiled interior, and the massive installation in the store’s heart.

The huge moss covered boulders are adorned with oversized mushrooms and other intricate flora, giving a nod to the Pacific Northwest and the lush surroundings.

We appreciate the natural levity that it lends the store, which focuses on nature-inspired skincare and beauty products.

One man’s funky is another man’s charming, at least with this newly listed home for sale in Kirkland, Washington. Dubbed “The Original Funky House” in 1974 when it was built, the unique floor plan, reclaimed materials, and beautiful location make it pretty damn appealing.

Passive solar architect George Reynoldson designed and helped build the home, and it was a pioneering example of green building in the 70s.

Built almost entirely using reclaimed or recycled components, it certainly was forward thinking for the time.

Located on a community pond and surrounded by large evergreens, the house also has a famous past, as it was the home of Nancy Wilson, founding member of the band Heart.

The 2,490 square foot home is around 20 minutes from Seattle, and is listed at $1,200,000. Via Curbed:

Portland Versus Seattle Infographic
Lots of updated stats and tidbits for 2018. Which Northwest city would you choose?

Years ago, we produced a Portland Vs. Seattle infographic that pitted the two Pacific Northwest against each other, in a friendly competition. Β That infographic garnered a fair bit of attention, and since a number of years have passed, we thought it’d be a good time to give the graphic an update. For 2018, we’ve added additional stats about home prices, major companies, public transportation, and other tidbits. Additionally, we’ve updated content that has changed over the last couple of years. The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful, special place, and to be truthful, it’s silly to have cities compete. But it’s been a fun undertaking to learn more about these west coast gems. Which city gets more rainfall? More sunshine? Click on the graphic above to see it in full-size detail. Which city is your favorite? Leave us a comment below!

BAMO is a world renowned interior design firm in San Francisco, and was hired to create a dramatic entryway to a new office tower in Seattle. The designer at work is actually my wife, Dina, and her final product is stunning, a sculptural, geometric wall made from reclaimed white oak. The wall spans out like a canopy of a tree, lending a spacious, invitingΒ feel to visitors. Visiting the project in person was exciting, to see the scale and craftsmanship of the lobby.

The lobby’s reflecting pool features natural cleft basalt columns, creating a great contrast from the wooden walls. The custom blue glass cube creates a beautiful and iconic entrance to the building. In an era of fast-paced buildouts, it’s great to see such care put into a building’s aesthetics, and will certainly be a welcome addition toΒ Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood. What happens when you pit five great bicycling cities against each other, aiming to find the coolest new design for an urban bike? The Oregon Manifest, an inspiring event that has spawned some truly awesome rides. This year is no exception, with five unique and innovative designs coming out of Chicago, New York, Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco. Each city’s team had to design and craft a working bike that took on challenges that cyclists face, while creating a beautiful ride that might make it to mass production. The winning bike design is decided by you, the voter, and will be put into production starting in 2015, thanks in partnership with Fuji bikes. Each city’s entry has a short video showcasing the design and features, check them all out and vote on your favorite!

South Carolina-based artistΒ Jessica DrenkΒ was born and raised in Montana where she developed an understanding and appreciation of the natural world that has since deeply influenced the course of her artistic career. HerΒ installationsΒ andΒ sculpturesΒ often imitate organic shapes, patterns, and textures even when using a medium that is often manufactured by human hands. Drenk’s most recent sculptures are a series calledΒ Implements, each of which begins with a mass of standard No. 2 pencils that have been tightly glued together. Using an electric sander she then molds the piece into a form that seems more likely to have originated in a dark cave or deep within the ocean than from a school desk. Of her work she says:

By transforming familiar objects into nature-inspired forms and patterns, I examine how we classify the world around us. Manufactured goods appear as natural objects, something functional becomes something decorative, a simple material is made complex, and the commonplace becomes unique. In changing books into fossilized remnants of our culture, or in arranging elegantly sliced PVC pipes to suggest ripple and wave patterns, I create a connection between the man-made and the natural.
