We really appreciate the juxtaposition that this building’s facade presents. On one hand, it uses Corten steel, a tough metal that is purposely used for the way it rusts and creates a tough yet elegant patina. Β On the other hand, the steel is woven carefully, like a vastly oversized wicker basket. Combining the material with the way its been used is pretty stunning, a unique pairing that make the building, known as Ferrum 1, stand out.

Located in the Polustrovo district of St. Petersburg, the building is the work of architect Sergei Tchoban, and one of the first in all of Russia to be made of sculptural Corten steel.

From Arch Daily:

“The seven-storey Ferrum 1 business centre is the first building in Russia to be constructed with Corten steel. This corrosion-resistant and extremely durable building material with its characteristic rust-red patina and velvety texture gives the building a particularly striking, expressive appearance. The theme of materiality, one of the most important aspects in architecture, was the focus when designing the faΓ§ade.”

We love the color and artistry that make this tattoo art by Sasha UnisexΒ so compelling. Using an angular, color-blocked style, the tattoos stand out from so many nondescript yet permanent tattoo art we’ve seen.

We also find her name compelling and fitting for this style, which would look equally good on both men and women. Based in St. Petersburg, her Instagram showcases her most recent work, and her audience, which is approaching a million followers. We imagine her client backlog is significant. Β Via Colossal:

Digital painter and illustrator Alex Andreev has a way with floating objects, otherworldly lands, and moments of strange emotion. His work is both very quiet and very disquieting.

Trying to categorize or summarize the genre ofΒ Alex Andreev’sΒ (previously) digital paintings is nearly impossible. Part science fiction, part dystopian future, the scenes are equally disturbing and beautiful, his characters inhabiting a world Andreev tells me is deeply influenced by Soviet-era literature, music and movies. Based in St. Petersburg, Russia he works primarily with Adobe Photoshop and Corel Paint and relies only on a small selection of brushes and colors to create each illustration, meaning there are no special effects or 3d-rendering of anything. Andreev recently published an art book,Β A Separate Reality, which is available throughΒ Blurb.com.
