Artist Melissa McGill’s Red Regatta adds a beautiful splash of red to Venice’s Lagoon, and is a wonderful example of kinetic, practical art in motion.
All hand painted, the many red sails on the small boats bring a cohesion and a flurry of visual interest, and goes to show that art can take many forms, and some just look more fun than others.
Red Regatta is an independent public art project created by artist Melissa McGill that activates Venice’s lagoon and canals with large-scale regattas of traditional vela al terzo sailboats hoisted with hand-painted red sails.
