Hold one of Wontek’s vases at arm’s length and you will read it as textile. The bands of color stack the way weft stacks on a loom. The pattern breaks and resets the way folk embroidery does.

The surface has that faintly irregular, hand-tended quality that usually means a person was involved. Then you step closer and find the truth of it. Every one of those threads is a line of extruded plastic, laid down by a 3D printer in a studio in Warsaw.

A studio named after a thread

Wontek is a small product design brand based in Warsaw, and the name does most of the explaining. It is a play on wątek, a Polish word that carries two meanings at once. It is a thread in the narrative sense, the plot line running through a story. It is also the weft, the crosswise yarn that makes a woven fabric a fabric. The studio built its entire practice on that double meaning, and once you know it, you cannot unsee it in the work.

The layer line is the magic

Most 3D printing spends enormous energy pretending it is not 3D printing. Layer lines get sanded away, vapor smoothed, primed, painted, buried under coatings, all in service of a surface that looks injection molded. The stepped ridge is treated as a defect to be managed.

Wontek goes the other direction entirely. The layer line is not a flaw to hide, it is the yarn. By swapping colored PLA filament as the print head climbs, the studio turns the machine’s most obvious tell into ornament. Every stripe is a pass. Every pattern break is a decision about when to change thread. It is the same logic a weaver uses at a loom, just running vertically instead of across.

The material is PLA, a compostable bioplastic made from renewable sources, which is a quietly sensible choice for objects this decorative. The vases get a glass insert so they actually hold water and cut flowers rather than sitting on a shelf as sculpture. And the studio is unusually direct about where the work happens: every piece is printed, finished and packed in house. Nothing is outsourced.

Four collections, one argument

Ancient Aliens is the loudest of the group. Traditional folk motifs get reinterpreted as digital ornament and woven in bold color pairings, cherry against lilac, dark green against sky blue, beige melting into peach and yellow. The silhouettes are deliberately archetypal, the sort of bulbous shouldered vase shape you would find in any museum’s ceramics wing, which makes the pattern read as even more anachronistic.

Gradient is the quiet one, and maybe our favorite. Here the color changes are frequent enough that the bands dissolve into soft optical transitions, closer to an ombre dye job than a woven stripe. The Weave Boxes, small lidded containers for the things that accumulate on a dresser, are the best demonstration of it. Their concentric tops look spun rather than printed.

Basic does what the name promises, offering the same construction in restrained palettes for people who want the texture without the volume. And Afterloom is the studio’s most ambitious work by a wide margin. Instead of abstract geometry, the surfaces carry floral and animal motifs lifted from the traditional textiles of eastern Poland. Deer, birds, stars, trees of life, all rendered at print resolution and wrapped around a vase nearly half a meter tall.

The same technique runs through the lighting. The Weave and Mirage lamps put a frosted globe on top of a printed base, and when the light is on, the layered pattern reads as fabric shade rather than plastic housing.

Why a printed plastic vase counts as craft

There is a reflexive objection to work like this, and it usually arrives as a question about the hand. If a machine made it, where is the craft? We would argue the hand was never the right test. Plenty of genuinely handmade objects are thoughtless, and plenty of machine-made ones are not. What separates craft from production is judgment, the accumulation of small decisions about proportion, color, restraint and when to stop.

Wontek’s decisions are everywhere in these pieces. Somebody chose how many rows a pattern band gets before it changes. Somebody decided that a folk motif from a village textile could survive translation into a coordinate system. Somebody looked at a printer’s most famous flaw and recognized a loom. That is authorship, and it is the same instinct we admired in fiber optic tapestries and in the eight years of patience behind a cape woven from spider silk. Different tools, same appetite for a material used past its obvious purpose.

It also puts these vases in interesting company. We have seen 3D printing used to imitate the grain and swell of tree trunks, where the goal was to disappear into a natural reference. Wontek is doing something stranger and more honest. The vases do not pretend to be woven. They are printed, visibly and proudly, and they happen to arrive somewhere a loom would have taken you anyway.

Where to find them

Wontek sells directly from wontek.pl, with prices in Polish złoty. The Weave Boxes start at 89 zł, roughly $24 dollars, which makes them an unusually cheap way to own a piece of the idea. Vase No. 1 is 349 zł, about $93 dollars.

The tall Vase No. 3, at 42 centimeters, runs 1,490 zł, around 395 dollars. Lamps sit between 429 and 849 zł with a stated three week lead time, and the Afterloom vases top the range at 6,450 zł. Currency conversions are approximate and move with the exchange rate.
