In this fascinating little experiment, Indian ants with translucent abdomens were offered colored sugar water, and the resulting color showed through their bodies.

Discovered by a scientist who saw ants turning white after drinking spilled milk in his home, he set about creating droplets of colored sugar water. The photographs show the ants sipping at the droplets, with their resulting choices showing clearly through their backsides.

It turns out the ants preferred the lighter colors – the yellows and greens versus the reds and blues.
