Remarkable Lantern-Like Towers Planned for Bangkok

Heatherwick Studios is emerging as one of the most visionary and joyous architecture firms in the world.

Look no further than their latest project, entitled Hatai, which will consist of two unique towers that resemble traditional Thai lanterns, and create a memorable mark on the Bangkok skyline.

Housing both the Six Senses and Narai Hotel, the unique form of the towers echo the firm’s work on Lantern House, completed in New York City in 2021.

At ground level, an additional “public village” space will feature a vibrant plaza surrounded by native greenery, a serene shrine, a lively open-air market, a community nursery, and flexible event spaces, all woven together by a gently restored canal that winds through the development.

“There’s a richness to Thailand’s culture and historic architecture, but the anonymous, blank severity of many so-called modern buildings in Bangkok does not speak to this at all.  

“We wanted to do something that connects with the country’s heritage 
in a deeper way and builds detail, feeling and story back into the city.”

“We’ve designed a series of lanterns stacked on top of one another, collectively forming a much softer silhouette in the skyline, and we have the opportunity to create a major piece of public space – including rain protection, planting and water – all designed to encourage street-level life filled with curiosity and exploration,” studio founder Thomas Heatherwick said.
