Solar Mural Facade in Edmonton is the World's Largest

A 12‑story building in Edmonton, Alberta, originally aging and underutilized, has been transformed for the 21st century.

With a colorful, energy-generating solar facade and mural, the building’s exterior now powers a significant portion of its daily electricity needs.

This impressive building overhaul was designed using Mitrex’s eFacade PRO plus panels, which allow for limitless customization.

Indeed, the entire building is clad in solar, including the detailed mural, designed by local artist Lance Cardinal, who is a member of the Bigstone Cree Nation. You’d never know the artistic mural is actually generating clean, sustainable energy.

We’re especially impressed with the Mitrex solar system, which allows for such creative designs, while still generating clean energy.

Both the mural and black and colored panels have discreet solar-harvesting technology built in.

Spanning over 30,000 square feet and delivering more than 265 kW of solar capacity, the building, known as SunRise, will cut energy costs by $80,000 per year, for a four-year return on investment.

Guinness World Records officially declared the building as the largest solar mural in the world, and we imagine more artistic, power-generating projects will soon follow.
