KFC would never be labeled a ‘sustainable business’, but even the giant food chains have woken up to the realization that their waste streams need to be fixed. KFC in Hong Kong has a new edible wrapper made of rice paper, which wraps some of their most popular chicken sandwiches. The result is humorous and daring, and the branding doubles down on the absurd notion of eating your sandwich’s wrapper. Calling them “200% edible”, the brand is experimenting with this concept in Asia, but no word on the packaging making its way to North America. Another thought? How about skipping the packaging altogether? Design by Ogilvy & Mather Group HK . Via The Dieline:

The wrapper was a limited run tied to the Hong Kong launch of the Double Down, the sandwich that uses two pieces of fried chicken in place of a bun, so eating the packaging fit the spirit of the thing. It never went further, and edible packaging in general has proved harder to scale than the stunts suggest, because a wrapper you can eat also has to survive grease, heat and a delivery bag. Still, the idea keeps coming back. See ramen seasoning in dissolvable packaging, Biopack packaging made from seeds, and the machine that turns orange peels into cups.
