Reel-to-reel tape machines have an odd calm to them. Two reels, a straight run of tape, and the mechanics are part of the music. Love Hultén’s RGB 2.0 borrows that slow geometry and rebuilds it as a stepper-motor-driven synthesizer.

It comes wrapped in a wood cabinet that feels closer to furniture than equipment. The faceplate stays spare and readable, with thin graphic lines that link controls like a clean diagram.

At the top, red, green, and blue discs turn in plain sight, doing the quiet work of motion and mood.

Below, three stacked keyboards keep playing, sequencing, and parameter control close together, more compact workstation than showy statement.

RGB 2.0 was made as a one-off commission, the kind of instrument that looks fine powered down, and even better switched on.
