We’ve been fascinated by the relatively new wave of surrealist artists working today. Search “Surreal” on Instagram or Pinterest, and you’ll be flooded by people creating strange and unique pieces of collage, digital mashups, and otherworldly art in the vein of the surreal.

Of the artists working today, we think Julien Pacaud may have carved out the most distinct and replicated style. Using a combination of vintage photographs, geometric forms, and a graphic designer’s negative space, he has a look and feel that stands apart from many of the other surrealist collage artists working today.

Below are a large collection of his work, part of a series called Myths of the Near Future, carefully combining photos with graphical elements, all with a soft, pastel-like color palette. Via DesignYouTrust:

“I think that what drives my creation is my subconscious—the ways I express myself come rather randomly. I also don’t feel the need to explain my artworks, and am happy for anyone who interprets my work however they want—even if I created the piece with a specific idea in mind.”

The surreal, psychedelic collages by artist Denis Sheckler give us a window into the weird and otherworldly.

Faces are replaced by planets and galaxies, eyes rain down waves and surfers, and an overall sense of trippiness takes over. See more on his Instagram, Pills for Skills. Via Fubiz:

We seem to be in a golden age of surrealism, with the advent of great photo editing tools and image sharing platforms like Instagram.  Do a search for “surreal”, and you’ll be flooded with people creating collage-like composite images that blend scenes together in strange and wonderful ways. Artist Justin Peters is especially skilled at this art, and his latest collection showcases some of these weird and wild images.

We appreciate how clean and elegant the composites are, full of energy and life, yet also peaceful, and not overly complicated.

Collage art has had a renaissance in recent years, thanks to the instant shareability of platforms like Pinterest and Instagram. Artist Guillame Chiron has a keen eye for the absurd in his collages, bringing a sense of surreal scale and humor to life. He pulls heavily from vintage, degraded imagery from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s, and carefully combines scenes and scale to create work that is strange and fascinating. A striking collection of digital collages by Shagun Puri showcase Indian figures from all walks of life, composed with floral and nature arrangements. The distinctive graphic style gives these vintage photos a new life, with minimalist line work and shape elements contrasting with historical images. The figures range from people of royalty to those of lower castes, each of them cleverly partnered with graphical touches. Entitled Urbintage, we could see this series expand, showcasing a range of figures paired with interesting graphic design. Via Behance:

Egyptian artist Hussam Eissa has a great eye for visual collage, and his series Interstellar explores ideas of space, time and reflection. Dark, moody portraits blend with starry skies in elegant ways, building a scene that makes us introspective. Cailan Burns is an illustrator from Adelaide, Australia. His work is both trippy and charming. The piece above, entitled Mothface  is so dripping with color and depth that I feel like licking the computer screen would result in a high.
