A Pencil, a Few Strokes, and Suddenly This Cat Feels Alive

Cats have a special talent for looking elegant one second and completely unhinged the next, and that’s exactly what ShouXin nails with a pencil.

A black and white sketch of a curled-up cat, featuring large, expressive eyes and one paw raised.

His drawings are mostly graphite, and they feel like you’ve caught a cat in the middle of something: mid-pounce, mid-stretch, mid-roll across the floor for no reason.

A stylized drawing of a playful cat with raised paws and a cheerful expression, rendered in black pencil on a light background.

The faces are handled with real care (those eyes especially), but the bodies are where it gets fun.

Instead of outlining every detail, ShouXin uses a few quick, confident lines to suggest movement, like a tail flicking or a back curving as the cat twists away. It’s simple, but it feels alive.

What makes the work so satisfying is how edited it is. ShouXin has talked about how his style didn’t start out this clean.

Over time, he moved away from overly busy sketches and learned to strip things down to what matters most. Less fuss, more feeling.

A cartoon-style sketch of a cat with exaggerated features, hunched posture, and playful expression, drawn in shades of black and gray.

And honestly, that makes sense. Cats are all softness and speed, and too many lines can make them look stiff. In ShouXin’s hands, they stay light on their feet, a little chaotic, and completely themselves.

If you want to fall down the rabbit hole, you can see more of his work online, and he also offers prints and books if you’re tempted to bring one home.
