Located in frigid Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, the Icehotel is reborn every winter and lives out an extravagant few months, before slowly melting back into the earth. Started in 1989, the Icehotel has several competitors, but none can match the artistry and creativity of the original, with 35 deluxe rooms that are entirely carved, shaped, and formed by skilled artisans. This year is Icehotel 28. In addition to the “cold rooms”, the Icehotel features nearby dwelling that are traditionally and tastefully appointed. But if you’re making the journey to northern Sweden, near the arctic circle, you’d be crazy not to stay in one of these truly one-of-a-kind rooms. The detail is stunning, with elaborate carved walls and ceilings, custom lighting, and beds made entirely out of the frozen Torne river.
