After thirty years shaping the objects most of us carry, tap, and stare into daily, Jony Ive has turned his attention to something older: telling time.

A digital alarm clock with a minimalistic design placed on a bedside table, displaying the time and a small moon icon, with soft ambient lighting in the background.

In collaboration with Tokyo-based Balmuda, Ive’s studio has produced The Clock. It’s a 75mm square machined from a single block of aluminum, weighing just 7 ounces.

The reference point is the classic pocket watch. The radical departure is no hands.

Time is expressed through light alone. The “Light Hour” dial reads the hour via a pendulum-like sweep, developed after the design team studied the Foucault pendulum at Tokyo’s National Museum of Nature and Science.

It tells time the way a sundial does: atmospherically, not mechanically.

Three modes shape how you move through the day. Relax Time fills a room with ambient soundscapes. Focus Time layers in white noise. And the alarm builds gradually over three minutes rather than jolting you awake.
