Deep in the ocean lives a creature so strange and colorful it almost looks imaginary. If you thought you loved axolotls, you’re really going to love these guys.

It’s called a nudibranch, a tiny sea slug that comes dressed in electric blues, neon oranges, and frilly appendages that resemble underwater feathers.

If nature ever decided to experiment with psychedelic fashion, this is what it came up with.

Artist Arina Borevich has taken those wildly ornate sea creatures and translated them into something unexpectedly soft.

Through her project Wool Creature Lab, she creates tiny hand-felted nudibranchs from sheep’s wool, carefully sculpting every colorful bump, plume, and curl with a needle and a lot of patience.

Each miniature takes roughly six to twelve hours to complete, building layer upon layer until the wool begins to resemble its flamboyant ocean counterpart.

The idea first took shape while Borevich was working at a remote marine research station on Russia’s White Sea.

Surrounded by scientists studying these peculiar mollusks, she began making wool versions as small gifts, part hobby and part tribute to the wonderfully bizarre creatures living just beyond the dock.

Since then, she has recreated more than forty species, each one a soft, tactile homage to one of the ocean’s most flamboyant residents. Her long-term goal is wonderfully ambitious.

She hopes to eventually felt every known nudibranch species on Earth. Considering there are thousands, she may be busy for quite a while, but the world could certainly use a few more cheerful wool sea slugs.

While her shop is currently sold out, we can expect more creativity from her in the coming months and years.

And you can join her Patreon, where she does a monthly Nudibranch giveaway.
