Wes Anderson’s film The Royal Tenenbaums had a huge impact on us when it was released in 2001. The artistry, the subtle humor, and the anachronistic characters were all hugely memorable. But perhaps the character that stuck with us the most was the cranky, patriarch, Royal Tenenbaum. Played by Gene Hackman, the role was cast perfectly, and he helped elevate the entire film’s gravitas.
Living out of a dated hotel for decades, he tries to move back in with his ex-wife, and bring his children back into the picture. Chaos and hilarious scenes unfold, through his manufactured story of being near-death, and hoping to spend a few last days with his family.
One of our favorite scenes is a montage of Royal interacting with his estranged grandkids, and teaching them the ropes of being naughty and rebellious. Set to Paul Simon’s Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, it’s a pretty memorable and charming moment in a film full of wit, charm, and heart.
Gene Hackman was found dead at his home this week, with his wife Betsy Arakawa. He was 95 years old.
