Populous and Oualalou + Choi have partnered to design the Grand Stade Hassan II, an absolutely massive football stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.  When completed, it will be the largest in the world, with a capacity of over 115,000 people.

The location in Morocco cements the North African country as a football-loving one, and the stadium’s unique design plays homage to Morocco’s cultural heritage.

Based on the traditional ‘moussem,’ a type of social gathering, the design for the stadium features a grand, tent-like roof that integrates dramatically into its verdant, forested surroundings.

The renderings below show the scale and elegant design of the stadium, which feels unique and welcoming, something we can’t say for all stadium designs. Indeed, the vaulted, arched canopy of the design creates some wonderful architectural moments, with massive columns holding up the roof, which is a special aluminum lattice.

With verdant plantings, and a huge amount of additional interior space, we’re excited about the build of this stadium, which hopes to open by 2026 or 2027.

“The Grand Stade Hassan II is deeply rooted in Moroccan culture, with its traditions and contemporary expressions. It is rooted in ancient and primordial figures: the Moussem, the tent, and the garden, as well as the topography and landscapes of Morocco.

It’s a generous space, open to the world and respectful to the Nature it protects. The Grand Stade Hassan II de Casablanca is the embodiment of the great tradition of Moroccan hospitality. — Tarik Oualalou, Design Principal and founding partner at Oualalou + Choi.”
