It compensates for the loss of direct sun between November and March, when diffuse light dominates and shadows soften until they nearly disappear. Rooms become brighter without glare. Views extend to the tree line, where the architectural frame ends and the forest continues.

When Architecture Becomes Response Rather Than Statement
The region’s climate includes frequent rain and mild temperatures, with overhanging roofs protecting from rain and providing shade while well-insulated structures deal with the cool, damp climate. Northwest Contemporary design did not invent these strategies. It refined them until they became invisible, present only as the absence of discomfort. Water does not enter. Light does enter. The boundary between inside and outside blurs without dissolving. That balance defines the style more precisely than any catalog of materials or roof angles ever could.
