Some structures are landmarks the moment they’re finished. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the rare ones that has stayed instantly recognizable for nearly a century, through fog, earthquakes, and a paint job that never technically ends. It has been photographed more than almost any other structure on Earth, and yet it still manages to look startling in person — that improbable burnt-orange line strung between two headlands, disappearing into cloud on a foggy afternoon.
The bridge opened to pedestrians on May 27, 1937, and to vehicle traffic the next day — the 75th-anniversary celebration pictured above took place in May 2012, complete with fireworks and a bridge-wide light show, one of many milestones the span has quietly outlived. At 8,981 feet long, with a main suspension span of 4,200 feet and towers rising 746 feet above the water, it was, for decades, both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge on Earth. Joseph Strauss is the name most associated with it: he spent over a decade lobbying skeptical politicians, ferry companies, and the U.S. War Department to get the project approved and financed, and history has generally been kind to him as the bridge’s chief champion — though historians now also note that Strauss downplayed just how much of the actual engineering was done by other people.
That other person was Charles Ellis, a structural engineer who spent nearly a decade producing the ten volumes of calculations that actually made the suspension design possible, working alongside the bridge-building engineer Leon Moisseiff. Strauss fired Ellis in 1931, months before construction finished, in what most historians read as a dispute over credit rather than performance — and Ellis’s name never appeared on the dedication plaque in 1937. He went uncredited for 75 years, until a plaque honoring his contribution was finally installed at the south tower in 2012. It’s a useful reminder that the elegance of a landmark like this one is rarely the work of a single visionary; it’s usually a messier, more collaborative, and occasionally unjust story than the postcard suggests.
The bridge’s look owes just as much to Irving Morrow, the consulting architect brought in largely to handle aesthetics. Morrow designed the Art Deco fluting on the towers, the streamlined pedestrian railings, and the lighting scheme, and he’s also the reason the bridge isn’t painted the dull gray the U.S. Navy wanted (for visibility to ships) or the black-and-yellow stripes the Army Air Corps proposed (for visibility to aircraft). Morrow argued, in a formal 1935 report, for keeping the reddish-orange primer coat the steel already arrived in, on the grounds that it would stand out against the fog and blue water far better than gray, while still reading as warm rather than industrial. That color was eventually named International Orange, and it’s maintained today by a crew whose job, essentially, never finishes — touch-up painting runs continuously rather than on a fixed schedule, because salt air and fog are patient in a way paint isn’t.
Opening week in 1937 was, by all accounts, a genuine civic party: roughly 200,000 people walked the bridge on the first Pedestrian Day before a single car crossed, and a squadron of Army biplanes buzzed the towers as part of the celebration. It came after a construction period that killed 11 workers, ten of them in a single scaffold collapse in February 1937, just months before completion. It could easily have been worse — Strauss was unusually serious about jobsite safety for the era, and the safety net strung beneath the deck caught 19 men who fell during construction and lived, enough that they formed their own informal club: the Halfway to Hell Club.
Fifty years later, the bridge nearly proved its own engineering point a little too well. For its 1987 anniversary, an estimated 300,000 people packed onto the deck at once for a celebratory walk — so many that the bridge’s usual gentle upward arch reportedly flattened out under the sheer weight, a detail that terrified engineers at the time and became one of the more talked-about footnotes in the bridge’s history. It held. That’s really the whole story of this bridge in one image: a structure built with enough margin, and enough genuine engineering behind the postcard version of it, to survive being loved a little too enthusiastically.
Which brings us back to that paint crew, still out there today, high above the fog line, keeping International Orange looking freshly mixed rather than 90 years weathered. It’s an oddly moving detail once you notice it: the bridge’s most photographed quality, its color, isn’t a fixed architectural decision so much as an ongoing act of maintenance, repeated indefinitely by people most visitors never think about.
Nearly nine decades on, none of that history is really the point when you’re standing at an overlook watching the fog pour through the towers like something poured from a pitcher. What Strauss, Ellis, and Morrow actually built was a piece of infrastructure that also happens to be one of the great pieces of American design — proof that a bridge, a genuinely unglamorous category of object, can be engineered with enough care and color and proportion to become a monument instead.
