A window is the only part of a house that is asked to be two contradictory things at once. It has to be a hole, so light and air and a view can get in. It also has to be a wall, so heat and noise and weather stay out. Every window ever made is a negotiated settlement between those two demands.

We almost always judge them on the first job. The second one is where the money goes.

Cities with stable weather let bad windows hide. Melbourne does not. A day there can open cold, turn hot by two, and finish with wind and rain against the glass, and a house is expected to stay comfortable through all of it without the heating and cooling running constantly to compensate.

Older windows lose that fight in two ways at once. Single glazing conducts heat straight through the pane, and perished seals let air move around the frame. The result is a room that costs money to keep at a temperature it will not hold.

What the frame is actually doing

Most of the attention goes to glass, but the frame decides how much of the wall’s insulating work survives at the opening. Aluminum is strong and thin and conducts heat extremely well, which is excellent in a structural member and unhelpful in a thermal barrier. Timber insulates properly and asks for maintenance in return. Plastic frames sit in between, moving heat slowly without needing to be repainted every few years.

Two panes, and the gap between them

Double glazing is often explained as two panes of glass, which undersells the part that matters. The insulation is the sealed cavity in the middle. The glass is mostly there to hold the gap in place.

This is also why a failed double-glazed unit fogs up. The seal has gone, the cavity has taken on moisture, and the window has quietly reverted to being two sheets of ordinary glass. The view survives. The performance does not.

Noise is a separate problem wearing the same coat

People often assume the window that keeps heat out also keeps sound out. The two overlap, but they are not the same specification. Thermal performance likes symmetry and a sealed cavity. Acoustic performance likes mismatch, panes of different thicknesses that refuse to resonate together, and mass.

Which matters depends entirely on the room. A bedroom facing a tram line has an acoustic problem. A west-facing living room has a thermal one. Specifying both everywhere is how a window budget disappears.

The shape of the opening

Opening style gets treated as an aesthetic choice and is really a functional one. The question is what the room needs to do.

  • Casement swings out on a hinge and opens fully, which makes it the best ventilator of the lot. It also needs clear space outside to swing into.
  • Sliding takes no external space at all, which is why it survives on balconies and beside paths, and gives up some airflow for it.
  • Awning hinges at the top, so it can stay open in light rain. Useful in a bathroom, useful anywhere ventilation has to continue through weather.
  • Tilt-and-turn does two jobs with one handle: tilt in from the top for a draught-free trickle, swing in fully for real airflow or to clean the outside face from indoors.

Doors are windows with a harder job

Sliding doors buy a wide opening without demanding swing space, which is why they end up on patios and balconies. Bi-folds collapse to one side and remove the wall almost entirely, at the cost of more hardware, more track, and more to keep clean.

An entry door is a different animal. It is a security component first and a thermal one second, and the two priorities pull in opposite directions often enough that it deserves to be specified on its own rather than bundled in with the glazing order.

Installation is not the boring part

This is the least interesting sentence in any window conversation and the one most worth believing: a correctly specified window fitted badly will underperform a cheaper window fitted well. The seal between the frame and the building fabric is where air moves, where water gets in, and where the insulating value quietly leaks away.

It is worth asking who is doing the install, and how the gap gets sealed, with the same seriousness usually reserved for asking about the glass.

Judge the whole assembly

The frame material is the headline and roughly a seventh of the answer. What actually determines how a window behaves is frame construction, glass type, the number of panes, the seals and weatherstripping, the hardware, the configuration, and the quality of the installation, working together or failing together.

Get that combination right and the reward is invisible, which is the point. A good window is one nobody in the room ever mentions.
