Deep in India’s Anamalai Tiger Reserve, something astonishing happens each spring. As night falls, billions of fireflies begin to glow, together.

An explosion of perfectly timed flashes ripple across the forest canopy in one of nature’s most surreal light shows.

Filmmaker and photographer Sriram Murali ventured into this remote landscape to capture the rare phenomenon. The result is Minmini, a short film that showcases these tiny creatures pulsing in harmony, turning the forest into a living constellation.

In some of the images, the tree canopies are bathed in the light from the fireflies, as their bioluminescence paints the surrounding forest.

The synchronized glow isn’t just mesmerizing—it’s a mating ritual, and one that depends on true darkness. As light pollution creeps into wild places, this delicate choreography is under threat.

Murali’s work is a vivid reminder of what’s at stake. Wonder like this isn’t artificial. It’s ancient. It’s precise. And it only happens when we leave nature the space to do what it does best.
