We can always count on the work of Chris Labrooy to entertain, delight, and sometimes confuse us. His creativity is wondrous, and his love of cars and 3D rendering, combined with a keen sense of humor make his work a joy to explore.
One of his latest projects was inspired by his iPhone’s ability to make decent 3D captures of just about anything. This made him wonder if he could create 3D versions of himself to place in his art.
Before long, the series Me, Myself, and I was born. In it, we see digital copies of Labrooy stuffed, crammed, and stacked in awkward ways into the frames of cars.
A lover of the Porsche 911, we see Labrooy’s facsimiles creating the form of the car, bent, piled, and hugging the wheels. In another, we seem him crammed into the shell of a 90s German taxicab, wearing body-color puffy jackets.
It’s a wacky and invigorating exploration, but follows in the artist’s unique sensibility. Not taking himself seriously, and exploring new perspectives, no matter how absurd they seem.
