Renderings for the Dubai’s Downtown Circle project feel appropriately space-age and futuristic, with an enormous ring 550-meters tall and 3,000 meters in circumference.  It stands in the midst of Dubai’s skyscraper, encircling the Burj Khalifa, which still stands as the tallest building on the planet.

Designed by architecture studio ZN Era, the massive structure would be the first of its kind, leaning into a design that feels visionary and forward-thinking. Indeed, visions of science fiction metropolises come to mind when seeing the designs.

The ring would be composed of multiple layers, comprising residential, public, commercial, and cultural spaces. The circle would also contain a ‘green lung’ layer that houses trees, plants, and other green spaces.

The massive scale and resulting cost make this project a challenging one to approve and build, but the ideas within it will surely influence the city’s growth and building plans.

The renderings showcase e-VTOLs approaching, while a pod system of transportation whisks people to various places along the ring’s exterior.

“Architecture firm ZN Era calls Downtown Circle “a continuous metropolis” and feels it would provide a novel solution to the rapid urbanization and population growth in Dubai.”

“The proposed megastructure offers an alternative to the singular and unconnected high-rises found in most metropolitan areas”

“With a circumference of 3,000 metres, the downtown circle functions as a continuous metropolis which is flexible and forward-looking.”

-ZN Era

The transportation system alone is a novel idea, but when accompanied by the circle’s extreme height, make for a design that looks straight out of science fiction.

An area called the Skypark shows residents and visitors exploring the large green spaces, giving a sense of scale to this massive proposal.

No word on whether this ambitious plan has any chance of being approved, but we will surely revisit the story as things develop.

Fall from the world’s tallest building, there Burj Khalifa in Dubai, in this exhilarating FPV (first person video) drone video.
Expertly piloted by Andre Larsen, we plummet from from the top of the spire, down 163 floors, smoothly to ground level all within a matter of seconds.

The video, known as a drone dive, is harder than it looks to achieve, and requires practice and dedication to get the video smooth, without inducing nausea.

Have you visited the Burj Khalifa? Does this get you energized to visit, or terrified?

Zaha Hadid swung for the fences in the world of design and architecture. Her work always seemed ahead of its time, almost sci-fi, like it came from an alien planet.

She died a few years ago at the peak of her career, which was especially tragic, as women architects of her stature are rare. Luckily, her work will live on for generations, and there are still number of new buildings from her firm that are just opening now.

One of these new openings is the dramatic ‘Opus’ building in Dubai, a sleek glass cube with an organic void that spans the entire center of the structure.

Indeed, the shape is so complex and unique that it’s almost hard to describe, a free-flowing negative space that forms the identity of the structure.

The double glazed glass on the curved surfaces are also embedded with computer-controlled LEDs, creating a one-of-a-kind lighting experience at night.

Home to the ME Dubai Hotel, the building adds to the city’s opulent flair, but with a signature style only Hadid and her team could pull off.  Read more about the building’s architectural style and eco-friendly features on Design Boom:

moss and fog skyscrapers hero

We can’t help it, we’re enthralled by skyscrapers. While often derided as monuments to money, ego or materialism, skyscrapers can also be seen as design and engineering prowess at their finest. Almost as temples to what is possible with the human spirit.  For years, the Burj Khalifa has stood as the tallest in the world, topped out at an incredible 2,717 feet, or 828 meters. Lately, several new megatall skyscrapers have entered the picture, but none have yet claimed the title from the Burj. When Jeddah Tower tops out in 2020, it will have a height of over a kilometer, instantly becoming the tallest ever. Below are the current (as of late 2017) tallest in the world, in descending height and order. We’ll report back in the future with a newly updated list.

skyscraper chart

1. Burj Khalifa – Dubai

One of the most famous buildings in the world, Burj Khalifa took the world by storm, and ushered in a new level of fame for Dubai, the flashiest city in the United Arab Emirates. Designed by American firm Adrian Smith , the Burj cost over $1.5 Billion to build, and has 163 floors, which is far more than any of it’s competitors.

2. Shanghai Tower – Shanghai

The recently completed Shanghai Tower has the highest observation deck of any building, at level 121. It also boasts the world’s fastest elevators, which whisk people up at nearly 50 mph. Designed by firm Gensler, the twisting form has a transparent façade with double layer glass.

3. Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower – Mecca

We can’t say we’re visual fans of the enormous clock tower complex in Mecca. Looking like a gaudy cluster more destined for Vegas than the middle east, Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower is made up of seven enormous hotel buildings, culminating with the world’s biggest clock tower, which stands 1,971 feet tall. Finished in 2012, the clock tower accommodates the huge crowds that make a pilgrimage to Mecca every year. The building also holds the record for most expensive ever, at $15 billion.

4. Ping An Finance Centre – Shenzhen

Located in China’s Southeast, Shenzhen has been one of the fastest growing cities in the world for decades, with a population of over 11,000,000. Ping An Finance Centre was completed in 2017, and rocketed number 4 on the top 5 tallest building rankings, standing 1,966 feet tall, with over 115 stories.  The building was originally designed with a large, 180 foot tall antenna on top, but it is so tall that there were fears it would interfere with flights.

Kevin Wisbeth takes famous giant landmarks from around the globe, and photoshops them into different contexts, which is clever but also very handy, in terms of sizing them up. Via Colossal:

If the Seawise Giant (1,504 ft), the largest oil tanker ever produced, was placed into the main lake in New York City’s Central Park, it would only have 350 feet of extra room in the front and back of the tanker.

If the Titanic (882 ft) was placed on the deck of the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, the ship would have 210 feet of deck room left.

The B-2 Bomber is one of the most advanced and most expensive airplanes in the world. The wingspan of a B-2 is 172 feet, which is 12 feet wider than an NFL football field.
size-perpective-moss-and-fog-6
The Burj Khalifa is currently the tallest standing structure in the world (almost measuring 2,722 feet tall). If placed in New York City, it would stretch almost 1,000 feet past the One World Trade center and almost 1,300 feet taller than the Empire State Building.

The Dionysus asteroid is estimated to be 1.5 km wide or 4921.26 feet. The value of the resources estimated to be within the asteroid is around $2,600,000,000,000.

tower
The Burj Khalifa will simply be another tall building when these two towers are completed. The Phoenix Towers, to be built in the huge city of Wuhan, in central China, will rise a full kilometer into the sky. At 3,281 feet tall, this enormous undertaking plans to incorporate a huge number of green energy technologies, including wind, solar, thermal, biomass boilers and hydrogen fuel cells. At well over 200 floors and built on an island, the towers will be huge and garish, but also a hugely visible symbol of sustainable ingenuity and design, something lacking in modern China. Designed by UK Architecture firm Chetwoods. Via the architect:

Based on the traditional Chinese Phoenix – two birds, male Feng and female Huang; The plan was generated from Yin/Yang form to represent perfectly balanced union; Symbiotic – the Feng tower uses cutting edge technology to feed the Huang tower with renewable power.
