Modern Office in Amsterdam Uses Over a Kilometer of Laser Cut Fabric for Expressive Design

Very cool use of material in this office design in Amsterdam, employing over a kilometer of fabric, which was laser cut to fall elegantly in pale blue waves.

A welcome break from the trend of light wood-paneling that so many modern offices have turned to, using fabric that adds depth, shading, and visual interest.

Design studio Beyond Space has created an office interior in Amsterdam that doubles as a showroom using rippling laser-cut fabric to form cave-like spaces for working.

Created for Siersema Interieur, a studio that specialises in fabrics, Beyond Space looked to the nearby IJ-river to inform the design of the office in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Mountains, a Cross-Laminated Timber Skyscraper for The Netherlands

The Netherlands are a beautiful place. But mountainous, they are not. The relatively flat country does have its share of modern and impressive architecture, however. This new cross-laminated timber design is cheekily named The Dutch Mountains, and has a pair of towers that soar 426 feet (120 meters) into the air. The swoop design is remarkable not only for its modern CLT (cross laminated timber) construction. The interior features a highly open environment, exposing its beautiful construction techniques to occupants, not hiding them away behind drywall.

The profile of the towers form a sleek upward-rising “U”, and will surely add prominence to the city of Eindhoven, where the towers are to be built.

The beautifully swoopy towers will feature a plethora of indoor plants and trees, a publicly-accessible interior area, and true to its name, extra wide stairs in the atrium that encourage you to ‘climb the mountain’, not always take an elevator. Designed by Studio Marco Vermeulen, it’s one of our favorite new skyscraper designs of the new decade.

This LED Lamp’s Packaging Is the Lamp Itself

Innovation in packaging is great, especially when less resources can be used. Waarmakers, a Dutch design firm, has a lamp that takes that to a whole new level. Their R16 LED task lamp arrives at your door in a cardboard tube. Ingeniously, the tube is the lamp structure itself, with all the necessary pieces packaged inside. With a small amount of assembly, the slim tube lamp sets up quickly, and provides bright yet dimmable light for offices, homes, and buildings.
