Buildings Without Distractions

Architects can design the most amazing building, yet when it’s shoved up next to a bunch of others, it tends to lose some of the impact. The reality of our cities is that we don’t have space to give towers and big buildings a lot of breathing room. They’re necessarily cramped. Well, photographer and retoucher Florian W. Mueller of Germany wants to change that. Digitally, that is. His series Singularity III takes us down a collection of building compositions that have been retouched to remove any distraction, any neighboring structures. The results are surprisingly effective at communicating form, design, and flaws. When there are no other things to distract the eye, towers almost look naked, standing alone in a blue expanse.

Mueller’s other trick is to frame the photos so that the blue sky takes a commanding presence over the building, enhancing the feeling of isolation and solitude. Most of these photos are of Tapei, by the artist.
