The Citroën SM was like nothing else when it was released in the 1970s. With superlative steering, braking, and of course, styling, the SM was a hit with automotive enthusiasts, who praised the performance coupe and its styling.
It featured some true automotive breakthroughs, like a hydropneumatic suspension that still rivals the best in the business, 50 years later. It has been called one of the smoothest, most comfortable cars to drive of all time.
The car has a decidedly French futurism to it, and still turns heads today.
So for a 50th anniversary tribute, DS (a luxury offshoot brand of Citroen) has released a concept vehicle simply called the SM Tribute.
It hearkens back to the original, with unique lines and that characteristic tail that features integrated wheel covers.
Large, 21-inch wheels are a clear departure from the original, as is the interior, which draws some inspiration from the original SM, but is thoroughly modernized, with a floating, curved display and fascinating, deployable steering wheel.
That and the two-tone paint job, and we feel this Tribute is a fitting celebration to the past, while clearly looking forward.
No word if this concept will make it to production, but we can be hopeful.
