Grand pianos make a big statement, but also take up a huge amount of space in a home.
With this in mind, Sarah Nicolls with assistance from engineers Tim Evans and Chris Vaissière, along with piano builder David Klavins got to work. Their masterpiece? The Standing Grand from Future Piano. Up now on Kickstarter, the piano has been completely re-engineered to stand vertically. Striking to look at, they were adamant that it needed to sound as good as a traditional grand piano, while taking up far less space. In addition, the Standing Grand weighs only 180 pounds, versus the nearly 1,000 pounds of a traditional grand. We’ll be fascinated to see how this sounds. Via Uncrate:
I was teasing about marching band – This is brilliant. I would love to own one.
Ha! Yes, that’s actually pretty clever. 👌
Now that is an upright piano ready for marching band. What’s next? The backpack cello.
That’s fantastic, Carolyn! So glad we could help keep the dream alive. We don’t have any immediate timeline, but will update the story when we know more!
Wow!!! I live in a small cottage and it means I have dismissed any thought of having a grand piano on which to play my beloved Chopin. I nearly cried when I saw your brilliant design. Thank you for rekindling a dream. I only have questions when, where, how much? What a brilliant, historical moment for music and for spreading the joy, peace, and thrill that it brings to all of us. Thank you.
