Alarma is a design team that is launching a project referred to as “artfully conceived and meticulously designed dinnerware.” The dinnerware has alarmingly realistic spills and leftover smudges printed on it, giving a brief shock to your dinner guests, and probably jumpstarting your dinner conversation as well. The project is in funding stage at Crowd Supply, a new site similar to Kickstarter. We encourage you to take a look, there’s some really cool stuff there.

The “A Fine Mess” series is a 12-piece, fine-porcelain, modern and whimsical dinnerware set. Each set is comprised of 4 dinner plates, 4 side plates, and 4 bowls, and every piece will have its own unique artwork. The photorealistic art will be printed on the porcelain using the latest ceramic printing technology. All items will be dishwasher and microwave safe.

Todd Sanders is a master of his art. And his medium is neon, which is awesome. Neon signs, when done right, are magical, and digital displays won’t ever hold a candle to their visual impact. Β Sanders runs a shop called Roadhouse Relics, and it specializes in custom neon and other vintage signage. Here are just a few of the beauties in the collection. Β Via FastCo Design:

Straws by Francesca Pasquali the-tree-mag 39
This body of art byΒ Francesca PasqualiΒ does not suck, though the materials sure do. Made of nothing but drinking straws, these canvasses become 3D forms that resemble coral, clouds, and even digital renderings.

I was somewhat stunned walking down the drink aisle in Whole Foods the other day and seeing a 16 ounce bottle of juice selling for $10. I thought my $3 kombucha splurge was decadent. Β But apparently, these super-premium pressed juices are flying off shelves. The NYTimes has a colorful and interesting read on some of the latest juice trends, companies and ingredients on the market today. For instance, one bottle of BluePrint can have as much as six pounds of produce in it. Drink up.

Fast CoExist has an article about the future of food, and it involves creepy crawlies. You’ve probably heard that insects are sometimes considered the food of the future because they’re high in protein, low in fat, and take a fraction of the resources to farm and produce. The biggest hurdle for us in the West, though, is to make them appealing. Enter a UK startup called Ento (Bento box + Entomology) that aims to make insect-based food appealing, and even sexy. Their asian-influence stems from the notion that a clean and slightly exotic take on edible bugs may work to bring in skeptical (and squeamish) eaters. After all, it was only a few decades back that sushi was an odd and revolting concept to many Westerners. Β Cricket sashimi, anyone?

Watch design is an interesting area of study, because its a small canvas, and people are always trying to tinker with the look and layout of the watchface. Not too often do you find a watch design that breaks barriers, but the Type 3 by Ressence certainly does that. Ditching physical hands for a series of rotating discs, it has a ‘you’ve never seen this before’ style, and the elements are sealed with aΒ naphtha-type liquid that makes them appear to be projected directly onto the crystal. Β With no announced price, you can be pretty certain that this timepiece will be in the luxury price range. But that doesn’t mean it’s not high on the “I Want” list.

rubber barber - create hairstyles for each character by simply erasing

Adorable and hilarious, the ‘Rubber Barber’ series of erasers from Megawing are bound to bring a grin to your face.

“The ‘Rubber Barber’ by Chen Lu Wei for megawing, is a simple eraser that will make you smile. Each one has a face at its center,Β surrounded by a square of colour,Β which as the user erases, gradually creates various funky hairstyles,Β depending on how you work it.Β This process not only results in a happy interaction between user and the eraser, but also reminds people to use their imagination, and that sometimes mistakes can bring humour!”

In the process of erasing…

Different expressions on each eraser.

The way the erasers start.

Creating hairstyles comes with your erasing style.

Pretty clever.

Black Hole: Photographs of Paint Flung by Centrifugal Force by Fabian Oefner paint high speed

Spinning paint, byΒ Swiss photographerΒ Fabian Oefner. Using a modified power drill, Oefner captures flinging paint at just the right moment.

The motion of the paint happens in a blink of an eye, the images you see are taken only millisecond after the drill was turned on. To capture the moment, where the paint forms that distinctive shape, I connected a sensor to the drill, which sends an impulse to the flashes. These specialized units are capable of creating flashes as short as a 1/40000 of a second, freezing the motion of the paint.

I’ve posted quite a bit about 3D printing lately, from small ornamentation to printing livable structures on the moon. Here’s an example of 3D printing resembling dramatic sea organisms.

Via Data is Nature:
Jessica Rosenkrantz of Nervous System has recently posted a Flickr set documenting a test run of 3D printed forms that resemble oceanic organisms such sea anemone, coral and barnacles. The prints make use of bold colour palettes to accentuate the topologies of the shapes. The diffused hues combined with subdivided geometries, and sometimes employing strict symmetry, create some exuberant aquatic hyper-realities that wouldn’t seem out of place on a plate from Ernst Haeckle’s Art Forms in Nature.
