We’re a bit geeky about electric vehicles, and the promise they offer our lives. If you’ve not driven one yet, we encourage it, and imagine you’ll have some of the same takeaways that we did. Smooth, fast, simple, easy to drive. Quiet. Calm. All of those things start to feel normal after a while, but if you’re new to electric cars, it feels revelatory.

In the twelve-plus years that mainstream EVs have been on the roads, a lot has changed.

From the dowdy yet triumphant Nissan Leaf with a pitiful range, to the decade of Tesla dominance, and now to the era of broad choices, and wide variety of form factors, there’s been a lot of changes.

BMW has been dialing in their electrification strategy for the last several years, and this is a big step toward the future for them.

Called Neue Klasse (New Class) X, the SUV style vehicle features a number of innovations that set the brand up for the next decade of their electrification strategy.

Along with a sedan, the Neue Klasse vehicles feature an entirely new design language, which is angular yet sculpted, with unique light signatures, and a move away from aggressive styling.

Favoring a large, light filled interior, the belt lines of the cars are lower, allowing a more spacious look and feel.

With a design language that feels sleek, minimal, but not overly aggressive, the Neue Klasse cars feature large glass greenhouses, unique lighting signatures, and chiseled, clean body panels.

The interiors are full of new material choices, with a large array of sustainable or recycled options, and liberal use of interior lighting and two-tone schemes.

The entire forward dash houses displays that give car vitals, while a large center touchscreen offers customizable views of almost everything.

This new generation of BMWs promises big increases in range and efficiency, with better battery chemistry, and increased aerodynamics. We can expect up to 30% increased range over current vehicles in their electric lineup.

With next-level connectivity and faster computing power, BMW sees this next generation platform as their starting place for a new series of electric vehicles.

We can expect to see this concept car brought to life in the new iX3 starting in 2025, as a 2026 model. Learn more from BMW here.
